A few months ago, Apple filed a patent for "iGroups for iPhone", a new social app / service that the company is currently developing. The idea is to allow groups of friends or colleagues attending such events as a concert, a tradeshow, business meeting, wedding or rally to stay in communication with each other as a group to share information or reactions to live events as they're occurring.
Nokia has now put together a demonstration of a new platform that aims to accomplish something similar by for instance utilizing smartphones' Wi-Fi connectivity. With Nokia Instant Community, users will in the future for instance be able to create an ad hoc smartphone Wi-Fi network that enables instant sharing and chatting.
It doesn't look like Instant Community will initially take it as far as iGroups, which will likely go far in competing with various Web services, but for instant sharing and chatting, all you should need is people around you, and their Wi-Fi enabled smartphones.
That said, given Instant Community is an open platform, Nokia aims to let third-party developers take this platform to new levels. This basically means that we should see a lot of innovative solutions based on the Instant Community platform down the road.
