Google recently launched their I/O Developer Conference with a number of exciting announcements, including the opening of Google Wave to the masses, an introduction to Google Apps Engine for Businesses and some fresh APIs. However, one new product in particular, the Chrome Web Store, is grabbing the most attention of the lot (especially by ambitious digital publishers and entrepreneurs).
The Chrome Web Store will allow users to browse programs that can be purchased and operated using Google Chrome. Programs bought and sold there will be installable web applications (programs that run through the web inside Google Chrome). This allows for programs to be built as if they were sophisticated web pages, constantly evolving and updating.
Google’s VP of Product Management, Sundar Pichai, explained at the conference today that the Chrome store has a gallery of applications that can be added to respective tabs (windows) in Chrome. He demonstrated an HTML5 edition of the popular Twitter program TweetDeck and the popular mobile game Plants vs. Zombies.
According to Google’s blog, “there are already lots of great apps out on the web, but there hasn’t been one destination where you could easily find them. Our new Chrome Web Store is an open marketplace for web apps that helps people find the best web applications across the Internet and allows developers to reach new users”.
The project’s own blog, Chromium, explains further that “Google Chrome users who find web apps in the store will be able to create convenient shortcuts in Chrome for easy access. Also, developers will have the option to easily sell their apps through the store using a convenient and secure payment system”.
When the store goes live later this year, developers will instantly have access to millions of consumers. Many are eagerly awaiting videos of today’s keynote, details and insight into a new, sure-fire sales vehicle. Google is providing preliminary documentation and discussion group for businesses and developers who are interested in creating and selling products for Chrome.
